BK Kangrali Well Project
Reviving the BK Kangrali Well: Heritage Meets Utility
Introduction
While lakes are vital for regional water tables, historical wells are the backbone of urban and semi-urban water access in Belagavi. The BK Kangrali Well Project focused on the restoration of a traditional open well that had been abandoned and treated as a dump site. Pyaas Foundation believes that these ancient structures are masterpieces of local engineering. By cleaning and reviving the BK Kangrali well, we have provided an immediate, clean, and free source of drinking water to one of the most densely populated areas in the district.
About
The BK Kangrali project involved the deep cleaning, structural repair, and safety-fencing of a large-diameter traditional well. It is a prime example of our “Urban Water Security” initiative.
Problem
The well at BK Kangrali was filled with plastic waste and stagnant debris, making it a health hazard rather than a resource. Despite the water crisis, residents could not use the well, forcing them to rely on irregular municipal supplies.
Our Solution
Our team manually cleared layers of waste and used specialized pumps to drain the contaminated water. We then excavated the bottom to reach the natural springs (aquifers). Finally, we installed protective mesh and a pulley system to ensure the water remains clean and accessible to all residents safely.
Impact / Result
- Potable Water: Provides clean, naturally filtered water to over 200 households daily.
- Sustainability: Reduced the community’s dependence on expensive water tankers by 80%.
- Public Health: Eliminated a breeding ground for mosquitoes and restored a hygienic water source.
