Sulga Lake: Replenishing the Lifeblood of the Village

Introduction

The Sulga Lake Project represents a key piece in Pyaas Foundation’s regional water-security map for the Belagavi rural cluster. Sulga, an area with deep agricultural roots, was witnessing a steady decline in its natural resources due to shifting weather patterns and neglected infrastructure. Our rejuvenation project focused on restoring the lake’s role as a “community recharge hub.” By clearing the lake and its feeders, we have ensured that the village’s primary water asset is now capable of sustaining the agricultural and domestic needs of the population year-round.

About

This was a multi-phase project involving de-weeding, de-silting, and bund reinforcement. The project was completed with significant involvement from the local youth, who helped monitor the restoration process.

Problem

Sulga’s lake had been overgrown with invasive species and filled with silt, reducing its water-retention capacity to less than 20% of its original design. This led to a drastic drop in the productivity of local coconut and areca nut plantations which rely on high groundwater levels.

Our Solution

Beyond standard excavation, we focused on the structural integrity of the lake’s waste-weir (overflow gate). We repaired the masonry to prevent uncontrolled leakage, ensuring that the water remains in the lake to recharge the ground rather than just flowing away during heavy rains.

Impact / Result

  • Plantation Survival: Local farmers have seen a revival in their high-water-demand crops.
  • Drinking Water Security: Improved yields in the village’s public drinking water wells.
  • Environmental Health: A clean, thriving water body that supports local biodiversity.
