Macche Lake: Engineering a Sustainable Future for Macche Village

Introduction

The Macche Lake Project is a vital environmental initiative aimed at recharging the groundwater table of one of Belagavi’s rapidly growing peripheral areas. As urban sprawl moves toward Macche, the pressure on water resources has increased exponentially. Pyaas Foundation’s rejuvenation of the Macche Lake serves as a critical “recharge zone” that offsets this pressure. By deepening the lake and improving its catchment efficiency, we have ensured that the monsoon rains are harvested and stored underground, protecting the village from the “water-tanker culture” that plagues many developing areas.

About

The Macche project involved technical de-silting and the creation of “recharge shafts” within the lake bed to facilitate faster percolation of water into the deep aquifers.

Problem

Macche was suffering from a rapidly receding water table. As the local population grew, the existing lake—shallow and silted—could no longer provide enough recharge to keep local borewells functional through the summer.

Our Solution

Beyond standard de-silting, we focused on the lake’s inlets. We cleared natural drains that had been blocked by construction debris, ensuring that every drop of runoff from the nearby slopes reached the lake. We also strengthened the embankments to create a safe area for the community.

Impact / Result

  • Aquifer Recharge: Borewell levels in a 2km radius have shown marked stabilization.
  • Flood Prevention: Improved drainage has reduced the incidence of water-logging in the low-lying areas of the village during heavy rains.
  • Environmental Balance: Restored the local micro-climate and created a green zone for the community.
