Dhobhi Ghat Lake Project

Revitalizing Dhobhi Ghat Lake: Empowering Urban Communities

Introduction

The Dhobhi Ghat Lake Project is a vital urban intervention located in the heart of Belagavi. Traditionally used by the local washermen (Dhobhis) for their livelihoods, the lake had become a victim of urban neglect and pollution. Pyaas Foundation recognized that this water body was not just an environmental asset but a socio-economic lifeline for the community. Our rejuvenation work here bridges the gap between historical utility and modern conservation, ensuring that the lake serves its community while simultaneously functioning as a major groundwater recharge point for the city.

About

This project combined traditional de-silting with modern waste management. We worked closely with the local community to ensure the restoration was tailored to their daily needs while adhering to strict environmental standards.

Problem

The lake was heavily contaminated with laundry chemicals, plastic waste, and thick layers of sludge. This pollution made the water unusable for domestic or occupational purposes and prevented rainwater from percolating into the ground, contributing to the city’s sinking water table.

Our Solution

We undertook a massive cleanup operation to remove non-biodegradable waste followed by a thorough de-silting of the lake bed. We also focused on “Natural Filtration” by creating designated zones for community use, thereby protecting the core of the lake from direct chemical runoff and allowing the water to stay cleaner for longer periods.

Impact / Result

  • Livelihood Support: Restored a clean water source for hundreds of families who depend on the lake for their daily work.
  • Urban Recharge: Created a significant “recharge zone” in a densely populated urban area.
  • Aesthetic Value: Converted a neglected waste site into a clean, blue water body that improves the local micro-climate.
