Kelkar Bag Well: Reviving Urban Heritage for Modern Needs

Introduction

The Kelkar Bag Well Project is located in one of Belagavi’s busiest commercial and residential hubs. In an era where many traditional open wells are being paved over, Pyaas Foundation stepped in to save this vital source of groundwater. This project is a blend of heritage conservation and urban utility. By cleaning and restoring the Kelkar Bag well, we have provided an alternative to expensive private water tankers and reduced the strain on the municipal supply, proving that ancient water wisdom is the best solution for modern urban shortages.

About

This project focused on the deep-cleaning and structural preservation of a traditional stone-lined well. It involved removing urban debris and reopening the natural springs that had been choked by waste for years.

Problem

The Kelkar Bag well had become a dumping ground for garbage and sewage runoff. The water was toxic and the surrounding structure was crumbling, making it a public health risk rather than a resource.

Our Solution

Our intervention involved a complete “detox” of the well. We manually removed years of accumulated trash and used high-power pumps to flush the system. We reinforced the stone walls to ensure safety and installed a high-quality filtration cover and pump system to provide easy, clean access to the residents.

Impact / Result

  • Clean Drinking Water: Restored a potable water source for hundreds of local shopkeepers and residents.
  • Community Asset: Transformed a neglected site into a clean, respected public utility.
  • Zero-Cost Water: Significantly lowered the daily water costs for the low-income families in the area.
