Bailwad Lake Project
Bailwad Lake: A Lifeline for the Farming Community
Introduction
The Bailwad Lake Project in Bailhongal taluka is a prime example of Pyaas Foundation’s commitment to rural water resilience. In a region where farming is the primary source of income, water scarcity during the summer months used to lead to crop failure and economic distress. By rejuvenating this significant water body, we aimed to restore the ecological balance and ensure that the monsoon’s bounty is preserved for the lean months. This project has effectively transformed the local landscape, turning a once-parched bed into a thriving reservoir that supports the livelihoods of hundreds of families.
About
The rejuvenation of Bailwad Lake involved a massive de-silting operation and the strengthening of the lake’s embankments. By deepening the basin, we significantly increased its storage capacity, allowing it to serve as a perennial water source for the surrounding villages.
Problem
Prior to our intervention, the lake was heavily silted, with its depth reduced to almost nothing. This meant that even after a good monsoon, the water would evaporate or runoff within weeks, leaving the village wells dry and the cattle without a drinking source by early spring.
Our Solution
Pyaas Foundation deployed heavy machinery to remove metric tons of accumulated silt. This soil, rich in minerals, was utilized by local farmers to improve their land quality. We also worked on the catchment area to ensure that the natural flow of water into the lake was unobstructed by debris or illegal encroachments.
Impact / Result
- Agricultural Prosperity: Farmers have reported a steady water level in irrigation wells throughout the year.
- Livestock Security: Provides a safe and accessible drinking point for thousands of cattle in the Bailwad cluster.
- Ecological Revival: The restored water body has seen a return of local flora and fauna, improving the local micro-climate.
