It is a fact that most of the people have no idea what deforestation is, said Senior Social activist Shivaji Kaganikar, adding that this lack of awareness has caused many changes in the global economy.
Kaganikar was addressing after inaugurating `2016 Trees in 2016’, a go green drive initiated by Pyaas Foundation in association with Forest Department and Army at the premises of Golf Course ground in Belagavi on Sunday. He said Deforestation is increasing as a global concern. Kaganikar said that the effects of deforestation on the environment are numerous. The reduction of forests upsets the entire ecological cycle, he said, lauding the Go Green initiative of Pyaas Foundation.
Lt Col Jitendra Kumar of JL Wing was the chief guest. As many as 2016 saplings were planted by about a thousand people on the occasion. Deputy Conservator of Forests B V Patil, Belagavi Range Forest Officer Sunita Nimbargi, former Corporator Lalan Prabhu, Cantonment Board Member Shajid Shaikh and Vickram Purohit, former Mayor Vijay More, Preeti Kore, former President of Belagavi Chamber of Commerce and Industries Basavaraj Javali and others were present.
Speaking on the occasion, Pyaas Foundation President Dr Madhav Prabhu called up on the people to join the Foundation in huge numbers and work together for social and noble cause. Students of KLE Kankanwadi Ayurvedic College, RLS College, GSS College, Lingaraj College, KLE Nursing College, members of Jeevan Vidya Mission, Shresta Foundation and others participated in the drive.
About 1,000 saplings were distributed among the participants, asking them to plant them in their respective areas.
Pyaas Foundation Vice President Abhimanyu Daga welcomed and Secretary Rohan Kulkarni introduced. Director Kiran Nippanikar proposed a vote of thanks. Members – Deepak Oulkar, Avadoot Samant, Bharat Gupta and Swaroop Vasudev were masters of the ceremony.
